Our award-winning Kids on the Block Program was started in 1989 following a joint meeting of the McMinnville City Council and the McMinnville School Board during which both organizations acknowledged a mutual need to provide safe, supervised after-school activities for the many elementary aged children who were, at the time, hanging out unsupervised in and around their schools and surrounding neighborhoods during after school hours throughout McMinnville.  As a result of these discussions, the McMinnville Parks and Recreation Department established three initial Kids on the Block programs of 40-50 kids each, utilizing three McMinnville School District elementary school sites.

Today more than 600 children at six elementary schools participate in and benefit from this award-winning program.  The KOB program has expanded to offer effective homework assistance to all participants in addition to the ongoing variety of recreation and special interest enrichment opportunities presented each week. The extraordinary and successful blending of these efforts has created safe and extremely fun after-school environments that encourage learning, confidence, self-esteem, teamwork, cooperation, and friendships.

The Kids on the Block program benefits parents too. Parents of participating children, particularly working parents, are able to work more productively in their jobs and complete the tasks of their daily lives knowing with confidence that their children are safe after school, interacting with and being supervised by positive adult role models that make up the KOB staff.
